Well, it's about time I start putting something here...Modesto Poetry SLAM Team...
I have been posting at Blogit.com for nearly two years and I signed up this profile a couple of months ago so I could read and such. Right now I came over because my new girlfriend just started a blog today and I have not been able to find it - you see, she didn't tell me what user name she went on under, nor did she tell me the title of her blog. Whatever, she has shown me enough of her writing that I am comfortable waiting for the rest.
What I find intriguing about it is that she is an English composition and TESOL graduate student, yet she does not like to share her work with people. The fact that she might start putting something out there, even anonymously here on blogger, is kind of cool.
Last night she took me to the Modesto Poetry SLAM Team exibition, practice session, at the QUEEN BEAN Coffeehouse on 14th st. It was a good event, and the first Live SLAM I have been to. I've been interested in the Genre since I started watching HBO's Def Poeetry a few years ago, and I met a guy in Santa Barbara who had won one of their events and was starting a SLAM club at Santa Barbara City College. Unfortunately, that was just as I was leaving town and moveing to Turlock to finish my Bachelors degree at CSU Stanislaus.
I am rapidly falling in love with this chick I'm seeing, and the fact that we are both into writing and poetry is a big factor, but there are a dozen or so more, I'm falling hard right about now. Anyway, last night at the SLAM I decided that I have to dust off my poetry files and find a few pieces worth SLAMing out in public; Alisha says that I can practice on her and that she'll help me edit.
I have been taking every chance I can to get up in front of people and talk. I figure it is a good idea since I plan on being a Professor in a few years (well, maybe six) and I tutor now. I have spoken at two Honor's Conferences, one State Wide, and one our campus only, as a Junior no less. I ran Substance Abuse recovery groups for two and a half years, I have also presented at a student research competition, and been the main speaker at an AA meeting. Now though, I want to put some of my creative work out there in a preformance context, like I've been putting my writing out there on the Web for the past couple years, but more up close and personal.
I have been growing and changing, evolving in the context of my education and my art for a few years now and it is about time to really start strutting my stuff.
Wish me luck, and I might even come back and post some of the stuff I pick to SLAM. I might do it next month, or might wait until September, as I have a lot of studying to do for taking the GRE in August, and I'll be in Puerto Rico for ten days. Anyway, we'll see...peace.
